MORE OF THE MOSAIC OF ALDERBURY AND WHADDON

This is a companion book to the general history of Al;derbury and Whaddon, A Millennium Mosaic”. Beautifully illustrated throughout, there are 112 illustrations (85 of which are photographs, 16 in colour).

A section of “now and then” compared the modern-day village with the views of yesteryear.

TEA TOWEL WITH SCENES OF ALDERBURY & WHADDON

This 100% cotton tea towel is printed with line drawings of scenes from Alderbury and Whaddon. An ideal gift, it is available in either natural (cream) or bleached (white) cotton. Scenes include Brass Band by the Fountain (1902); brooch from Saxon cemetery at Petersfinger; tiles in the church; Alderbury Junction (illustrated); Ivychurch House Academy (c.1830-1862); Ferry at Shute End; map of Alderbury; Fountain memorial; and fragment of carved stone from Ivychurch Priory.

BRICK AND TILE MAKING IN ALDERBURY

Algar, D, Grinstead, K & Johnson B (2008). There is a long history of brick and tile making in the parish, dating back to at least the 13th century and the time of the mediaeval royal palace in nearby Clarendon Park. In more recent times, hand-made brick were produced in Whaddon until the closure of the brick works in the 1970s. This book, the third in the series “Looking Locally”, tells the story of 600 years of brick and tile manufacture in the parish.

Hammond, PM (2007). Built on the site of what may have been a Saxon Minster, the church of St Mary the Virgin celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2007. Beautifully illustrated, this book tells the story of the church and its features, describing a village institution which has linked the generations for centuries. Foreword by the Rt. Revd. Dr David Stancliffe, Bishop of Salisbury.

INNS AND ALEHOUSES OF ALDERBURY & WHADDON

This is the second booklet in the series “Looking Locally”, describing the history of the hostelries in Alderbury and Whaddon. Nowadays, there are two public houses; the Green Dragon is where Charles Dickens stayed and is said to be the Blue Dragon in Martin Chuzzlewit; the Three Crowns in Whaddon is where three kings are rumoured to have stayed while hunting in the royal forest of Clarendon.
